Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne is set to extend his contract with the club in a few weeks, per reports. The Belgian could have had the deal over the line if not for the unfortunate arrest of his agent Patrick De Koster.
De Koster was allegedly arrested on fraud charges late August after the player asked his financial accounts to be looked into. De Koster, who runs the management company J&S International Football Management, allegedly tampered with client funds’ running into millions of pounds. He is in custody now and awaiting further action. The agent has been with the player for over a decade, starting from whilst he was at Genk in Belgium. He is allegedly skimming of the player’s money hence the investigation into him.
With the departure of David Silva, Pep Guardiola has handed De Bruyne the arm band, and seeks to extend the player’s contract so he can end his career at the club. The 29-year old will sign a five-year deal, per reports. The player currently earns 280,000 pounds per week which is set to increase to 350,000 pounds per week. The bumped-up wages would also reflect his contribution to the club especially as he won the Premier League Player of the Year last term.
De Bruyne has been brilliant under Guardiola, as he was with the prior managers. The records speak for himself. He equaled the record number of assists per season and is the player that could break Thierry Henry’s record.
While the player blew away competition from Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane, next term will come with even more competition in the league. Christian Pulisic impressed this term and if fit will be a contender for Young Player of the Year and Best Player. Bruno Fernandes has been impressive since joining. With United supporting him and with more good display, he is a potential Player of the Year candidate. As the clubs sign more players and rework their teams to compete, next season will be even more competitive.
